Mountains in the distance from a hospital

Being stuck in a hospital doesn’t mean you lose creativity.

The grayscale rendering allows you to really take control of your photo. The dappled light on this tree trunk makes everything about the texture more interesting to me.⁠⠀

Each image has something to say. In the night, these leaves were home to a spider who might still be in residence. He spun his trap to capture bugs in the dark, and the traps saw use.⁠⠀

How tight can your light range be? In this photo, I like that I have a few (very few) highlights, and a lot of rich dark shadows and deep green saturated leaves. The little spider webs here are fascinating to me.⁠⠀

This is my last unschooled attempt at zone theory before I get down to serious study. Can you spot all eleven zones in this photo? A couple of them took extra work in post. I hope that's not a violation.⁠⠀

This is how White Carpet Roses get started. I used the headlight, grill and hood of a black luxury car for the background. f/2.8 gave me plenty of subject isolation. I'm happiest with the light though.⁠⠀

One more note on DRO being turned off. Metering is simpler. It's less work. I'm going to re-examine my book on the zone method for film.⁠⠀

Without DRO turned on, I'm finally able to capture light correctly. I don't have to play with exposure values as much in post. It allows me to capture light better against dark backgrounds.⁠⠀

DRO (Dynamic Range Optimization) affects the output of a jpeg file in camera. What you don't know is that it affects the preview and histogram too. If you shoot RAW on a Sony, turn this setting off, and what you get will be closer to what you see.⁠⠀

One setting can change everything on my Sony. I shoot RAW, but no matter how good the shot preview looked straight out of camera, it would always go into lightroom darker than I expected. Then I turned of DRO, and everything changed.⁠⠀

Yes this is a photo of serpentine-esque aggressive postures from pollen purveyors. The part of the birds and the bees speech I never heard, but learned too soon is, Reproduction often involves aggression. Species doesn't matter.⁠⠀

When you examine the very small, sometimes it's hard not to ascribe emotions to what you see. In the case of this daylily, pollination seems more aggressive, doesn't it?⁠⠀
