Low Light and the Sony A7R III

LowLightShot.jpg

So, you all know I swapped out my gear for a mirror-less rig. Well, my initial impression of the new system is: Awe. I keep getting that feeling of anticipation when I snap a certain shot with it. I can't wait to get home and see how it looks on the big screen. I just know it's going to be good, and I'm eager to see how much better I can make it in post. The above shot was intentionally pushing the boundaries of what a camera should be able to do.

I purposely left my ISO set at 50 for the shot, because I wanted to see what I could get from a low light exposure. Of course, I couldn't change the aperture in that situation because I needed the lens to open up all the way, so for my 50mm prime lens, that means setting the f-stop to 1:1.8 and exclusively using shutter speed to increase the exposure. That worked out to 1/5 of a second. Yeah, you read that right. One-Fifth of a second. (.2 sec)

I've never held a camera that stabilized the shot at less than 1/60 of a second, so consider me impressed. Hell, consider me awed. This camera is more than capable of letting me push boundaries and play with extreme settings in all lighting situations.

GAME ON!
